Best Friend

Jonathan Devotional

Read the biblical text: 1 Samuel 18:1-4; 1 Samuel 19:1-7; 1 Samuel 20

Practical

Stick a large sheet of paper to the wall. Write as many words as possible to describe good friends.

Reflexion

Jonathan and David were very good friends. They made a friendship pact. When we are friends, we take care of each other, we take the well-being of the other at heart. We do everything in our power to make our friend feel loved, protected and valued. Nowadays, some friends offer gifts from BFF (Best Friends Forever) to show their friendship. David and Jonathan could have afforded these kinds of gifts; one would have had an arrow and the other the bow!

When we follow and obey Jesus, he calls us his friends. What kind of friend is Jesus? In John 15:13, Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This is what Jesus did for his disciples and for us. Are we ready to give our life for our friends?

Questions

  • What kind of friend are you?
  • How is Jesus different from your other friends?
  • What does it mean to be Jesus’ friend?

Prayer

Thank you, God, for (name a friend). I give thanks for (name his qualities). Help me to be a good friend for (name the friend).
